Cavalier King Charles Spaniel (medium coat) : : Male : : Adult : : Medium I would love you more than you can imagine.
Russell will be 3 years old in July. He is retired from a breeding kennel in Ohio and according to his foster family, he’s one of those rare ones that embodies just about everything we envision when we think about the breed. He is very much a puppy, very playful, and seems to have boundless energy. He loves being outside in the fenced backyard, and he enjoys running and exploring. Curiosity seems to be a hallmark of this breed, and he’s no exception. He is constantly exploring inside as well, and wants to pick up everything that he can.
Russell was very shy when he first came to Lucky Star, and it took a few weeks for his fosters to get to know him. He was shy, but not afraid. There was just so much for him to take in. He was friendly with the other Cavaliers right from the start, but it took him a while to warm up to people.. He’s certainly come a long way in just a few short weeks. He is very people-bonded. He would do well in a house with 1 or 2 other Cavalier, maybe more, but he would thrive in a home where he could get plenty of individual attention. He is definitely a “velcro” Cavalier. He’s not been around other breeds while in foster care so he cannot be evaluated. We do not know if he would be afraid of larger dogs.
Russell has made good progress with house training, although he does still have occasional accidents. The humans need to continue to play a role with housebreaking. He does best when he’s on a consistent schedule. He does still want to mark, so he needs to be watched or wear a belly band. He has been sleeping in a kennel in his foster home and would suggest that routine until he becomes established with his new home. He likes being in his kennel. We close the door when he’s eating to keep the other dogs out, and then at night so he’s not tempted to “sneaky pee" while we don’t have eyes on him. We think he would best thrive in a home where someone was home most of the time. In his current foster home, there is someone home all of the time.
He has not yet mastered walking on a leash. He seems to be a fast learner, and we don’t anticipate any problems. He has no health problems, had a clean dental, and, as with all our rescues, is microchipped. All-in-all, he is one of the most well-rounded, most adoptable fosters that we’ve ever had. We’re excited for him to go to his new home and continue to grow with his new family!
Russell is being fostered in southeastern Ohio, near the West Virginia border. We require a securely fenced yard ,another canine companion in the home (preferably a Cavalier), Cavalier experience and knowledge of the breed.
