Teddy - MA

January 24, 2010

Teddy is about two years old.  The vet who saw him couldn’t believe that this dog could even stand up.  As you can see, he was so emaciated that he was only skin and bones, no muscle between the two.  In spite of his horrible physical condition, Teddy has been a happy, friendly boy since the moment he was rescued from an Amish farm.  Our vet discovered that Teddy is diabetic and since he never received any treatment for his condition, his body was just eating away at itself since he was born.  Now that he is being treated, and his insulin is close to being regulated Teddy has put on 12 lbs and is very close to his ideal weight.  He now weighs 26 lbs and is a big Cavalier!  His hair is starting to grow back and he's finally looking like a Cavalier.  It has taken several months for Teddy to be well enough for adoption and he will need insulin injections twice a day for his entire life and his food and weight need to be monitored with diligence.  Injections are needed on a regular schedule of every 12 hours.  We’re so grateful that there is no permanent damage to his kidneys or liver from this neglected condition.  That itself is a miracle.  Teddy does show some evidence of early cataracts.  Nonetheless, Teddy remains a happy boy.

No doubt this boy has seen the very worst and knows that every moment from here on is a gift.  Teddy’s in Lucky Star hands now, he’s going to be fine!  He is a beautiful affectionate boy who loves his foster mom and just wants to be near and loved.  Teddy is truly an ambassador for rescue.

A home with small children would not be appropriate.  Food intake needs to be monitored closely to keep the diabetes in check.  He loves to nap with the Cavaliers siblings in his foster home and particularly loves to sleep on the big bed.  He will jump over a baby gate to get to his foster mom.  He likes to be with people all the time.  He would not be happy left alone for long hours at a time on a regular  basis.  Teddy is a perfect gentleman when he is included with humans but when he is left alone, he is not happy.

Teddy is being fostered in MA, please complete an application if you have experience with diabetes and are able to diligently monitor this condition to ensure he'll have a healthy life from here on.  Contact mary401339@aol.com of your interest and please state your location.
